I have used your services for a few years without problems with multiple domains.



And I can transfer to zoneedit DNS servers.







Then a few months ago I hit a bad patch when my PC was down due to a crash.







I missed a domain renewal notice from renewals (buried in a backlog of email) and as a result lost ownership of an important domain name, by days.







I suggest that if a customer has held domain name(s) for several years, renewed in previous years, and does not respond <> to a domain renewal warning then some extra step(s) might be taken, at low cost to you.







Suggestions:



* A <> of domain renewal required by return email?



* A final notice by letter if email response not received?



* just-the-name to act as proxy holder of expiring name, then sell if not taken up within an agreed time?







Just some smarter rules for customer notification might help in these rare cases (i.e. customer might be ill or unable to receive email but still wishes to hold onto domain).







I've now built a cron script to remind me of domain renewal dates!







Otherwise an excellent service.

Well done. I tried registering last night with 123-reg. After filling in the reg form and supplying payment details as the final step, I was advised to call them to complete the order to prevent fraud. Not at 50p per minute I wasn't ... I left a message for them to contact me and from what I've read from a lot of on-line reviews, it's going to be months before I do hear anything.



I called your offices and my call was picked up immediately after selecting the option I needed.

I have been trying to change the domain to a hosting provider (123-reg) and have filled in the details on the transfer form with the DNS servers, domain names and IP addresses, but nothing seems to be happening.







If necessary, keep my money, release the domain name, and I'll pick it up from somewhere else.

Subject: URL Masking






I'm having some problems with the URL masking. I'm running the free trial to check it out and it looks amazing. There are some issues I'm having with it though before I commit to the full on service. I'm running Mac OSX 10.4.7 and my web browser is Safari. More often than not when I click on the links of my site, the HTML CODE comes out in a sort of "text appearance" rather than the page actually loading the HTML code. When I refresh the site, the actual page loads. It seems like a minor issue but it is quite a big inconvenience for me.

Subject: Delays to email within Just-the-name systems






For the past week I have been experiencing some delays of several days in my incoming email messages being passed between two of your internal systems: mail1.metronet.co.uk (MetroNet Mail) and mail.just-the-name.co.uk (Postfix). In some cases Metronet has sent a bounce message to the sender because of a timeout in trying to contact Postfix. This is very worrying - I have reported it by email, but thought it worth posting here because other users may not be aware of the problem.







It would be good if Just-the-name could send a message to their customers to tell them about these problems and say when they estimate that they will be fixed. Your status page at gives the response:







"Internal Server Error



The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request."







which does not inspire confidence!







Apart from that, I find the service very satisfactory.

Questions have been answered accurately and quickly. I think I will invest in your URL masking again for one of my domains now it's doing so well. http://www.vogames.co.uk is hosted with you and I guess I just want to say thanks for being a genuine internet site. An invaluable service .. and the control panel does EVERYTHING you could possibly need to manage your domains efficiently and securely. If there was one feature I could have on the control panel that isn't there it would be a quick list of links to all my other domains hosted with you. That would save me some time when making changes to the settings.

From previous experience in purchasing domain names we found that having investigated the availability of a name, unless purchased there and then it was soon sold and offered back to us at an inflatted price.

Just two teeny-weeny gripes:-







1. An individual login for each domain is a pain, a single login to manage all my domains would be much nicer (for me! 8-)







2. It would be nice if the expiry dates for domain registraions and URL masking were shown somewhere (maybe they are and I've missed it!) say on the current settings page - would be a useful memory jogger for me to start chasing my clients...

Very good service, although DNS query times are a bit slow. Nevertheless, the control panel interface works flawlessly.







The pricing of the names is higher than some competitors that I know of - I do not know what I get from you that I do not get from them for the money. On the other hand, you only supply names, whereas other providers probably make their profits from other products, not their names.

Subject: How do I add a reverse DNS record?






I've been getting log errors on my mail server form vairous other mailservers saying that unless I configure a reverse DNS record, (PTR) they might ignore my email. How do I configure this?







Also on another issue, I've requested a transfer of one of my domains (garghouti.com) back to your nameservers 2 days ago, this still has not taken effect, do i need to do more than just enter your nameservers in the domain transfer form?

rDNS records are not associated with domains, they are associated with IP ranges. You need to firstly have a static IP address and speak to the people who supply you with that IP address. Then ask them to supply you with the rDNS record, if they are willing to. Nameserver's take time to propagate, DNS is not an instant system! Besides according to our logs you only made the request today at 1500 GMT and that is why they have only been changed today. Please also bear in mind that most people, including ourselves, have been busy with locking everyones domains to prevent problems caused by ICANN's 'infinite' wisdom: http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2004/11/09/domain_transfers_and_hijackings_to_become_easier.html

It is good that you allow user to use their own DNS servers for their domains whilst you still hold the tag for the domain and I think you ought to make more of a point of explaining that you provide this and how to achieve it.







One feature you lack is the ability to administrate several domains under a single login rather that one login per domain. This would simplify administration a great deal.

First let me echo all the good things others have said about the service JTN provides - it's excellent, thanks!



Is there any chance of setting up web forwarding for subdomains? As it stands, the DNS Settings can be used to define a synonym for www.domain.whatever or to direct to a defined host, but the latter requires the server to be set up for the appropriate subdomain.



The ability to forward subdomains to different sites (or directories) would be extremely helpful.

Top marks! JTN were a great help in what was a complicated reseller transfer (no fault of JTN). Finally got there after much help from them - and they never processed the payment until it was all up and running. My .com renewal fee is now half the cost of what it was and they give you an extra year into the transfer bargain as well. The superior forwarding works faultlessly.

After spending some time playing about making little software programs and utilities for myself and friends, I decided why not make a go of it and register a domain name and set up some hosting. Thankfully, as I'm on cable and not expecting thousands of hits a day, I am able to host my site from home.







However, no site is complete without it's own registered domain name right? This is where JTN came in, a good few months back before I began programming or making websites my brother registered a domain under another company. This company charged him more than JTN, AND he had to pay extra for all the things JTN offer inclusive, such as DNS management for a start.







Basically, my domain cost me a mere £9.99 inc. V.A.T (a .co.uk domain). So far, this and the money I'm about to invest in URL masking (how great is that feature? I've seen some before that use frames that make the code look unprofessional and the URL never changes. But, JTN's is about as good as it gets).







I'd just like to thank the person who suggested JTN for me, both myself and my brother use them to register all our domains, and suggest them to everyone we know who is considering buying their own domain, unfortunately I forgot who this person was.







However, I would like to thank JTN even more than the person who suggested them. Their services are second to none, efficient, reliable and user friendly, not to mention cheap. What more could a person ask for?

The simple, no-fuss registration process is just the start - the service is very efficient and registration (i.e. from selecting the domain to it being up and running) took only one day. The control panel is very clearly laid out, and it is very easy to change settings. The URL masking is definitely the best I've found (and I've tried quite a few!), and its logging system is a welcome feature. Plus of course the price is the lowest around (and believe me, I've done extensive research). No catches, unlike with UK2.NET where the "1p per domain per month" feature does not include registrar fees, and they include a banner on your site unless you pay more, plus to get that price you've got to register >10 domains, and so on.







One slight annoyance though - the price for web forwarding went down just after I ordered it!!







And a suggestion for improvement - it would be useful to be able to combine the "DNS Settings" and "Web Forwarding" features, to allow different subdomains to be forwarded to different addresses. E.g.:







http://www.mydomain.com --> http://[somewhere]/mysite/



http://prices.mydomain.com --> [somewhere]/mysite/prices/



http://site2.mydomain.com --> http://[somewhere else]/myothersite/







This is the only feature I've found that other companies offer (e.g. Speednames) and Just-The-Name does not.

One client saved over £100 a year on *each* domain they buy (currently they own at least twenty just from JTN since I've introduced them) by hosting with a well-known hosting company and using URL masking to achieve an indetectable professional appearance in the browsers title window.


We have a high-volume site (www.scoutingresources.org.uk) that we use JTN's URL Masking on without any problems, hassle, configuration issues, downtime or slowdown. And that's a not-for-profit site, which JTN's prices seem to favour especially.


All in all, flawless. I'm just awaiting whatever their next new feature will be.
